Phenology

Identification This is the smaller relation to the well known Stag Beetle. Though smaller ij relative size , it a large beetle no enlarged mandibles as the male Stag Beetle.


Life Cycle white, C-shaped larvae feeds on wood. Adults as well as larvae are found in very soft decaying wood of broad-leaved trees, especially ash (Fraxinus excelsior), beech (Fagus sylvatica) and apple (Malus spp).

Habitat Found in woodland and sometimes in gardens, especially where there are large trees or orchards.
