Stocky body . large dark bill, upper body blue and gleaming turqoise, underparts orange chestnut, female with red base to lower mandible. rapid darting flight, often perches on posts. Seen in Britain all year round

When does it Breed ?

April to July , 6 - 8 eggs, Incubation 19 - 21 days , young fledging at 25 days, 2- 3 Broods per year . Nests in hole on river banks.
