How Big Is the Oyster Catcher ?

Aprox 43 cm weighing 600 g

What Do Oyster Catchers look Like ?

Large stocky shore bird with red legs and otamnge red bill . Upperparts black, underparts white . Eyes are Red. In the winter plumage it will have awhite band to the sides of neck. Sexes similar. In flight it exhibits a white wing bar, with a white tail with a broad black terminal tail band . A sociable bird.

Where does it live?

Coasts and beeches of all kinds including inland waters.

When Do They Breed ?

April to July , 3 Eggs , Incubation 22 - 34 days , Young fledging in 28 - 30 Days. Colonial breeder nesting on the ground.

What does it eat?

Mussels,crustaceans, snails , lugworm.


What does it sound like?

Piercing " kliep kliep " when threatened " gleea gleea"


When to see it

All year round.
