Identification

This is a very distinctive easily identified by the jet black colour adorned with orangey-gold on the base of its wings, on its feet and on its facelarge fly, black, with conspicuous, bright orange wing-bases and black shiny body. . It is a large fly and .Mesembrina meridiana is a conspicuous and attractive fly, to be seen in cattle-rearing areas, basking on open ground and visting flowers for their nectar.Eggs are laid in cattle dung, in which the larvae are carnivorous, feeding on other fly larvae.They are very common in ares where cattle occupy pasture next to woodland.Also called the midday or noon fly because of the ttime of day when it so basks.
