Classification Order: Diptera – true flies Family: Syrphidae

Length .

Phenology

Identification

It resembles A. transfuga (which seems to be much the scarcer of the two) but the male of contracta has a much narrower build and the female has a distinct constriction at the base of the abdomen due to the concave side margins of tergite 2.

Life Cycle

Adults visit a variety of flowers including umbellifers and brambles. The rat-tailed larvae develop at the bases of emergent plants, and the submerged parts of Bulrush may be especially important.
