Phenology

Identification Hoverfly with a deep crimson band occupying most of the abdomen. It is a flash of this colour moving through undergrowth or around the bases of old trees that tends to first alert you to its presence.

Similar Species

Xylota segnis is superficially similar but is somewhat smaller with a less striking orange band on the abdomen and partially pale legs.

Life Cycle

Habitat

B. lenta is a widespread though localised species of old woodland and is quite shade-loving. The larvae develop in the rotting heartwood of species such as Oak and Beech. The larvae of this species occur in the decaying heartwood of particularly Oak and Beech.in live trees with exposed decay at ground level.
