Wing Length .6.5 to 8.5 mm.

Identification

A small hoverfly. Markings on tergites 3 and 4 are usually fused into bands There is some dimorphic variation, and males differ from females.

n Males The yellow marks on tergites 3 and 4 often fail to reach the lateral margins,

In Females yellow band is often pinched at the lateral margin, so that only about a quarter of it remains yellow.

The frons is equally black and yellow, with no forward extension.

Life Cycle

A species Varying , some years being quite common, then almost disappearing the next.

Habitat


Prefers open habitats, like for damp meadows and lush vegetation, but can also present in gardens.
