One of many similar patterned, large froghoppers, but probably the most common and widespread.Genus can be recognised by the keel running down the midline of the head and pronotum, The species can be derived from by the colour pattern with distinct white patches near the margin of the wings (but caution should be applied to other similar coloured Aphrophora species and Philaenus spumarius,and its variations ).
