Length . Queen 20-22 mm, Workers 11-16 mm Male 14-16 mm.

Description Black body and bright orange tail. Workers have similar colouring as the queen but much smaller. Males have similar colouring but with more yellow hair.

Phenology May to September.

Life Cycle


This species underground with dry stone walls a good location to find colonies and will nest under any rough masonry stone that will give ingress to the ground . Nest Size varies from between 100 - 200 bees with variation on these figures

Habitat Gardens and hedgerows.
