The melanic form hirschkei is said by Waring to be distinguishable from other melanics by wing-shapeA first season pug with single generation flying early in the year in addition to the typical form there is a fairly common melanic form, ab. hirschkei, absent of many markings.

Life Cycle The larvae feed on oak (Quercus) and hawthorn (Crataegus).
