Laves long , marginslobed with prickily thorns. Stem erectusually branched. Capitula ( flower head ) 2 - 4 cm wide, in Corymbs , occasionally solitary. Bracts thorny,the inner row, ray likeand straw coloured. Only disc florets present. Fruit with a pappus of hairs

Habitat
Dry grassland calcicolouslikes a soil wihich is dry but rich in minerals but low in nutrients. Locally common rarer further North and on higher ground
