Description
Medium Deciduous tree with red berries. The underside of the leaf is white. It can reach 20 m - 25 m 60 / 75 ft in height. It takes its name from the dense coat of short white hairs on the underside of the leaves.
Whitebeam is found in light woodland and scrub, chiefly on chalk and limestone. It does occur on sandstone although less frequently, and is not found wild on acid soils.
Season
- The leaves unfold in late April.
- The flowers bloom May through to the end of June.
- The fruits are ripe in September.
- Leaves fall in late October after turning yellow and fawn.
- Berries are fleshy but edible the fruits being called Chess
